Tedburn History & Information Society

“Tedburn St Mary as it is now known, appears first mentioned in the eleventh century, - in the 1086 Domesday Book referred to as Tetubirna; in the 1266 Assize Records as Tettesburne; and in a 1575 Saxon map as St. Mary Tetborne. The derivation may be from the eleventh century reference to Tott(s) stream, evolving into Tette burnham, burns meaning stream.

Approximately one mile south east of the original village of Tedburn lies Taphouse, referred to in the 1356 Assize as La Taphouse of the Inn at the Crossroads. The crossing roads being that of the Dunsford to Crediton road intersecting the main road from Exeter to Cornwall. Developed around 1760 and ‘turnpiked’ in 1780, this east-west road climbed very steeply to the village of Whitestoneand into Exeter. Around 1790 an alternative road was created, forking south at Taphouse, it travelled to Exeter through lowland.”

At the Domesday Survey, Tedbourne (Teteborne) was held by Ralph de Pomerai, under Baldwin de Sap.

The group was formed about 6 years ago by Karen Fletcher and Malcolm Little, who wanted to save the history of our wonderful village and allow all of those who are also interested to view the information we are able to collect. We have photographs, census’, family tree information, family bibles, newspaper cuttings, property information, information about village organisations and much, much more.

We are based at the Little Chapel (at the Cemetery) and are open on Saturday Mornings between 10 and 1.

If you are interested in joining our group, share your own information or view the information we have please contact us as below.
